The Death of Socrates, by Jacques-Louis David, 1787:
This classicist painting from the 18th century captures what the scene may have looked like right before (or after?) Socrates drank the poisonous hemlock that resulted in his death. The Athenian state sentenced Socrates to death for "corrupting the youth" of Athens through the numerous dialogues Socrates entered into with Antenians. Through the dialectic, Socrates believed that man could come closer to truth; a truth that went against the teachings of the Athenian state.
