Chritopher Columbus, shown above in the many ways that artists have depicted him, "discovered" the New World in 1492 when he and his crew attempted to reach Asia by sailing west from Spain. To Columbus, and many Europeans, the New World offered the possibility that a utopia could actually be found or constructed in this new environment. Learn more about Columbus' thoughts as he sailed across the Atlantic by clicking on the link below, "Columbus' Journal." Be sure to read Columbus' entry on Wednesday, Octover 17, which descirbes the beauty of the New World nicely, hinting at utopian potential.
